What's happening

We identified that the Mersey Road bicycle route is an important secondary route linking the employment centres within the Lefevre Peninsula.

We proposed several treatments along this route to improve cycling. Different treatments were selected based upon the streetscape. A separate path has been provided where there is sufficient width within the verge. For section of Mersey Road that are greater than 9m, we can re-allocate space within the existing road cross-section to provide a dedicated on-road bicycle path while still maintaining two travel lanes for traffic and parking on the western side (property side) of Mersey Road. At other constrained locations, we are providing the ‘shared road’ pavement marking to highlight this is part of a cycling route.

We asked our community for feedback on the proposed treatments for the bike way including any suggested improvements or concerns.

We have now completed the Elder and Mersey Road Bike Way with grant funding assistance under the State Bicycle Fund.

  • Benefit - Designated Bike Path

People on bicycles will be able to use this new route to travel along the Lefevre Peninsula. The route is made up sections of: off-road path, on-road bike paths, existing off road paths and short lengths of ‘shared’ on-road sections.

What we asked

We asked our community if there was anything you specifically required or that you would like us to consider, in designing and constructing this bike path.

How we asked

What we heard

We received 19 responses from residents and businesses during the consultation period, with mixed viewpoints within the local community.

Do you have any suggested improvements for the bike way or concerns you'd like noted?

Key comments / themes:

  • Support for bike way
  • Concerns surrounding narrowing of street and effects on parking, traffic and/or safety with bike lane added.
  • Concerns regarding speeding on Mersey Rd
  • Possible use of land alongside railway line for bike way (crown land)
  • Shared section and bike path on same side of road if possible
  • Bike way extension into Port Adelaide

Next steps

Following feedback from our community, we decided not to proceed with the on-road bike path at this point in time.

Instead, we provided shared lane marking or bicycle sharrows along this section of Mersey Road.

We remain dedicated to the Elder Road / Mersey Road bicycle route and will keep exploring options for the corridor in the future. As demand and usage gradually increase, we will re-evaluate treatment alternatives, with the aim of potentially introducing the on-road bike path down the line.

The Elder and Mersey Road secondary bike way has now been completed. See before and after pictures below of different areas of the bike way.
